Kowanyama means "place of many waters" with 90% of its population of Aboriginal and Torres Strait descent, including Kokoberra, Yir Yoront (or Kokomnje) and Kunjen clans, who each have language and other cultural differences.
Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire Council is one of the largest communities on the Cape York Peninsula serving an area of approximately 4120 square kilometres and a community of more than 1200 residents.
