AUT is the second largest university in Aotearoa New Zealand. We have been a university since 2000, but a place of learning for 120 years and operate in accordance with the Education Act (1989).

AUT is a contemporary New Zealand university, led by a strategic team and governed by a council. The Vice-Chancellor is the head of the University and is supported by the Strategic Leadership Team.

The AUT Council is the governing body of the University and is made up of lay members, academic and professional staff, at least one student, and members appointed by the government.

AUT’s School of Sport and Recreation was ranked as the top-ranked sport science school in New Zealand - ranked 39th in the world and the only New Zealand university ranked in the top 100 globally. The ranking consultancy identified international collaboration and research output as particular areas of strength in sport science at AUT.

Top in New Zealand for clinical medicine

AUT was ranked in the top 150 universities in the world for clinical medicine; first equal in New Zealand. AUT is also top in New Zealand for research influence and international collaboration in that subject.
