Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council are looking for a service orientated individual with a good understanding of finance and accounting concepts, experience in working in a team and excellent communication skills. 

This role will suit a currently enrolled student studying accounting, business, economics or similar. As a cadet, you will undertake a mixture of practical on the job training and formal learning to develop both technical and professional skills. You will be guided and trained by experienced finance professionals while supporting them in their day to day duties providing project accounting services for Council’s major infrastructure projects and managing relationships with internal project managers.

Key Accountabilities

  • Work closely with Project Managers to develop an understanding of the project accounting requirements, review and assess project information and develop useful financial reports.
  • With the support of the Program Coordinator, Financial Performance, create project accounts, prepare cashflow forecasts, monitor project costs, report on budget variances and close-out project accounts upon completion
  • Build XLOne reports that automate financial reporting for projects and that meet the needs of Project Managers, Executive, Council and External users
  • Build XLOne reports that meet grant funding requirements and support Project Managers with the regular submission of milestone reports, submission of claims and grant acquittals.
  • With the support of the Program Coordinator, Financial Performance, prepare Capital Expenditure Reviews to support major investment decisions for major infrastructure projects
  • Develop an understanding of Australian Accounting Standards and the Code Accounting Practice and apply the requirements to support Council’s asset accounting
  • Prepare clear, well-structured work papers to meet Audit Office requirements, and to support an efficient capitalisation process throughout the financial year
  • Use TechOne software application to standardise regular reporting and develop efficient and streamlined processes
  • Contribute to workplace health and safety, risk, environmental and quality (HSEQ) objectives and targets
  • Contribute constructively to culture of health and safety within the Council
