School of Special Educational Needs: Sensory (SSEN: S) is seeking an energetic, motivated and aspirational Teacher of the Deaf to be based in Kalgoorlie.
The School of Special Educational Needs: Sensory (SSEN: S) provides educational support for children with a hearing loss and/or vision impairment from birth to completion of school. SSEN: S is based at the Statewide Services Centre in Padbury and supports children in both public and non-government schools throughout Western Australia.
SSEN: S operates the Deaf Education and Vision Education programs to support eligible children, their schools and families. SSEN: S employs teachers with specialist skills and other specialist staff such as educational audiologists, school psychologists, braille transcribers, Deaf education officers and educational interpreters.
The Teacher of the Deaf delivers targeted learning programs based on the Expanded Core Curriculum including areas such as compensatory or access skills, self-determination and assistive technology. Additionally, the Teacher of the Deaf provides consulting support to schools and agencies in the provision of appropriate teaching and learning adjustments.
Successful applicants will need to demonstrate a sound understanding of the Western Australian Curriculum and best classroom practices to cater for the needs of individual students. Additionally, a sound knowledge of developing and implementing personalised learning plans, assessment tools and reporting to parents and schools in a timely manner is necessary.
It is highly desirable that suitable applicants for all Teacher of the Deaf positions hold a Master of Special Education – Majoring in Deaf/Hard of Hearing or similar, or are working towards this qualification. Suitable applicants will be required to complete an Auslan program either by distance education or an in-house program.
As our service encompasses children from birth to Year 13, we are seeking a teacher with experience in working with young children and/or school age children and their families. The successful applicant will have recent experience supporting children with a hearing loss and/or complex educational needs in regional locations.
Additionally, the capacity to impart knowledge in a range of ways including delivery of student learning, professional learning and coaching, in face to face and on-line/remote formats is desirable. Experience and understanding of working with Aboriginal students and their families will be highly regarded.

The role may involve travel with overnight stays including long distance driving, some of which may be in remote locations. Successful applicants will be required to hold a current and valid ‘C' class drivers licence.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
