About the role
Reporting to the Manager of Strategic and Statutory Planning, as an experienced planner this is your opportunity to join the Boroondara leadership team and contribute to the future direction of planning and development in our city. You will be the key role managing Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) appeals and hearings, and the presentation of appeal submissions on behalf of Council.

You will play an important role in the professional development and mentoring of planning staff to improve the level of skills within the Department in assessing planning applications and representing Council at VCAT. The Team Leader Arborist, administering Counil's Tree Protection Local Law reports to the position.

You will drive a strong customer and improvement focus analysing internal processes and implementing improvements to create efficiencies and build customer focus.

The position requires a strong multi-disciplinary approach to projects within the department and across the organisation, and contributes to the achievement of council objectives at a corporate, group and departmental level.

About you
You know the ins and outs of Statutory Planning and have strong experience representing at VCAT. You are an effective leader. You will work with your team to achieve big things - you are accountable, provide opportunities for development and work with other coordinators to deliver great service to the community and nurture engaged teams.

Skills and Experience

  • Detailed understanding and experience in dealing with the principles of statutory planning, the planning system and legislation and their application at the Local Government level.
  • Strong experience in representing Council at Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
  • High level ability to represent Council in a professional and productive manner in public forums such as Council Meetings, consultation forums, meetings with external stakeholders and within the organisation.
  • Strong leadership skills with experience in mentoring and developing staff
  • Exceptional customer service skills including the ability to resolve conflict and build positive relationships.
  • High level of problem solving, investigative and analytical skills with the ability to deal effectively and diplomatically with conflict, complaints and enquiries;
  • Ability to effectively communicate within political and complex environments in both written and verbal channels.
