Position purpose

The position is responsible for the assessment of various applications within the Operational Works team with a focus on Tidal Works/Coastal Works applications (Jetties / Pontoons / Bridges etc). The role will require a strong understanding of tidal works legislation in addition to engineering standards. As a result, applicants with a planning background who possesses an interest in engineering will also be considered.

In addition to tidal works applications, the position may also be required to assist with the assessment of various Operational Works applicaitons as necessary. The role will also be responsible for providing advice to other staff and external customers on various matters relevant to assessment.

Key position responsibilities

  • Ensure development (via assessment) is undertaken in accordance with associated development approvals, the City Plan codes, policies and other relevant legislation / design standards in relation to tidal works/coastal works applications. In addition, assessment of the following application types are to be undertaken if necessary:
  • Operational works – Infrastructure (bulk earthworks, stormwater, water and sewer, roads, electrical reticulation and street lighting)
    • Operational Works – Vehicle Access Works
    • Operational Work – Change to Ground level
    • Construction Management Plans conditioned through a development approval
    • Temporary Ground Anchors
  • Represent the Operational Works team in various meetings (Pre-lodgement, Development Assessment Review Team (DART), coordination meetings with internal officers and external parties)
  • Contribute to the development, review and updating of Council’s Land Development Guidelines, Standard Drawings, Specifications, Codes and Policies to ensure development is undertaken in accordance with the latest standards and engineering best practice
  • Communicate effectively with internal Council officers ,external consultants, developers and the general public to provide information and resolve development related issues and complaints

About you

  • Well-developed interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • The ability to research and interpret legilsation and standards
  • Experience with the assessment or preparation of development applications for operational works (Tidal works, Infrastructure, Vehicle Access Works) or an ability to rapidly acquire relevant knowledge
  • An awareness of general planning and environmental issues, best practices and sustainable development principles
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of State Government legislation and Council by-laws/policies as relevant to civil and/or coastal works is highly regarded
  • Bachelor of Civil Engineering Civil or equivalent knowledge with Local Government experience in development applications.
