Welcome to Cairns State High School

Founded in 1917 as an annex of Cairns Central State School and moved to its current site in 1924, Cairns State High School stands proudly in the centre of Cairns. Currently the second largest secondary school in Cairns, we have a very proud and distinguished history and continue to enjoy an exceptional reputation. We value our long standing traditions yet look forward with energy to the future.

What sets Cairns State High School apart from other schools is our use of educational research to determine our focus for the future and kept it as simple as possible so objectives can be achieved. Teaching is our number one priority; focusing on our core business and working together to improve the quality of the classroom experience is absolutely critical to what we do.

Our teachers work in teams to develop a consistent, quality approach to instruction that also values their personal pedagogical gifts: that x-factor that teachers bring to the classroom. Cairns SHS teachers are recruited based on their qualifications, diverse experience and enthusiasm for working with young people. Every one of us here in the school values being part of our school community; the development of strong professional teams where practice is shared, planning is done and feedback is sought and given shows just how committed our staff are to being ‘the best we can be'.
