How this position will Make the Difference to City of Melbourne…

The Legal branch at City of Melbourne, works to meet the various needs of the Council in respect of local government legislative requirements and processes to assist the Council to achieve its corporate goals.

Your role as Legal Counsel, will be to provide high quality and strategic legal and related advice and support to the Council and its functions. You will provide legal services in relation to all aspects of the powers, duties and functions of the Council and to all members of the Council. You will be committed to the overarching obligations as an officer of the Court and to the integrity of the law and its conduct, which are fundamental and will not be compromised. In addition you will act consistently with the Model Litigant Guidelines.

Our ideal candidate will be a confident communicator and comfortable managing multiple matters at any one time. Providing expert advice to manage and minimise risk (both financial and reputational) in relation to decisions and implementation of Council’s strategies will be fundamental to your success.

  • Ability to demonstrate and display City of Melbourne Values – accountability, integrity, courage, respect for self and others, and striving for excellence.
  • Admission to practice the Supreme Court of Victoria and holder of a current practising certificate to practice in Victoria.
  • Demonstrated experience in legal practice relevant to compliance, enforcement, property, planning and other areas of law relevant to local government.
  • Proven ability to provide clear, specialist, expert and strategic legal advice on complex and sensitive matters and conduct legal proceedings in courts and tribunals.
  • High level writing and verbal communication and computer literacy skills with an ability to communicate in plain clear language.
  • Proven interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills, particularly in the provision of expert, accurate, confidential and sensitive advice and support to the Council and corporate management. Ability to develop effective working relationships with a wide range of people.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and participate in projects relating to the development, implementation and review of major organisational legal issues and initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to use a positive and proactive approach to problem solving, and to work to multiple and demanding timelines.
