Job Description

Gympie Regional Council recognises the importance of providing meaningful unpaid work experience placements to students undertaking secondary and tertiary studies in our region. Our Work Experience Placement Program aims to provide students with an environment that promotes learning opportunities that offer an insight into real-life work and careers within Local Government.

Eligibility and Limitations

To be eligible for placement applicants must be:

  • at least 15 years of age
  • enrolled with a secondary school, registered training organisation or university who can provide a formal work experience placement agreement and covers the applicant for public liability and worker’s compensation/personal accident insurance*
  • required to undertake a work experience placement as a part of their study/program

*A formal work experience placement agreement and appropriate certificate of currency must be received by Council at least two weeks prior to the commencement of the placement.

Work experience placement opportunities shall be limited to positions that:

  • Have low exposure to health and safety risks
  • Operate within ordinary working hours (Monday – Friday, 6 am – 6 pm)

Work experience placements are subject to Council staff availability, time, workload constraints. Council endeavours to accommodate as many students as possible but is unable to guarantee that any applicants will be placed. If more applications are received than placements available, preference will be given to students who reside in the Gympie region and/or local institutes.

All work experience placements are unpaid.

Duration of placement is up to 38 hours for secondary school students and up to 114 hours for vocational education and university students. Placements may be for a consecutive period or on a regular work pattern (e.g. Monday to Friday or Every Wednesday). Placements for more than the above hours may be considered on request.

Some roles have special requirements such as a General Construction Induction (White Card), Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Working with Children Check (Blue Card). It is the student’s responsibility to provide all requested special requirements.

Please contact your learning institute’s work experience placement advisor to confirm your eligibility for a work experience placement and ability to provide a formal work experience placement agreement and certificate of currency’s for public liability and worker’s compensation/personal accident insurance. Council will require copies of this documentation at least two weeks prior to the commencement of the placement.

How to apply?
Work experience placements are available twice a year through a formal application process:

Intake 1
Application period: January to March
Placement period: May to July

Intake 2
Application period: April to June
Placement period: August to October
