About the Parks and Recreational Services Branch
The Gold Coast has an outstanding reputation for the enviable lifestyle it offers residents and visitors, fundamental to that is the quality of the parks and open space across the City.

Located within the front-line community facing Lifestyle and Community Directorate, the branch is responsible for the use and provision of open space and community land in the city. Some of the signature projects include Broadwater Parklands, Coplick Family and Coomera Sports Parks, Palm Beach Parklands, Gainsborough Green Parks, and Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens.

About the Position
Starting mid June 2021 this position has a diverse range of responsibilities to ensure the parks and natural area estate continues to make valuable contributions to the City’s lifestyle, its environment and the economy.

Managing over $1.4 billion in park and recreational assets, the role has responsibility for optimising the use of over 600 leased community facilities, promoting grass roots sport, increasing physical activity, planning and delivering a diverse range of capital works, as well as leading branch business planning and other improvement initiatives.

The position is responsible for the development and delivery of a wide range of projects from $100 million park development to replacing a seat in a park.

The position has significant responsibilities for the sustainability of the City’s much-loved natural areas, facilitating sustainable, nature-based recreation opportunities for the community. The role manages over 13,000ha of natural areas, including 3,000ha under active restoration. The position is also responsible for the management and mitigation of significant environmental risk factors including bushfire, landslip and rockfall hazards.

Key deliverables of the position:

  • Planning to meet the short, medium and long term needs of the City.
  • Manage parks and associated improvements delivered through development assessment and capital works.
  • Manage over $1.4 billion in assets across over 2300 parks.
  • Manage a large natural area estate with significant and diverse biological values.
  • Provide expert advice to Councillors, senior management, staff and customers.
  • Improve the health of the community through partnerships and programs.
  • Budget development and financial management.
  • Workplace health and safety management.
  • Leading and driving cultural change as part of a high performing asset management workforce.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective relationships and networks to improve and enhance relationship management for the branch.
  • Facilitating linkages through regular networks and information sharing and participate in local, regional and state-wide committees as required.
  • Actively participate in disaster management mitigation and coordination.
  • Delivery of quality reports and presentations, including Council Committee Agenda Items.

About You
You will have a passion for providing quality service to the Gold Coast community, be a visionary, foster innovation and new approaches to service delivery, identify strategic opportunities to advocate to other levels of government to benefit the city, and play a key role in the development of many major urban landscape project within the city.

  • Bachelor's degree and post graduate management qualification in a relevant area.
  • Extensive experience in strategic planning through to day to day operational management of a large, diverse park and recreation estate.
  • Significant senior management experience in leading and driving a large workforce within a large organisation.
  • Managing complex service and asset portfolios, including responding to operational issues and managing a variety of stakeholders.
  • Effective analytical and investigative skills with the ability to initiate, formulate, implement, monitor and evaluate strategies, policies, techniques and methodologies.
  • Exceptional interpersonal communication skills including consultation, advocacy, and conflict resolution as well as exercising a high degree of sensitivity and confidentiality in order to manage competing stakeholder interests.
  • Exceptional written communication and presentation skills, with particular emphasis on reporting to management and senior executives to support/influence organisational decision-making; including the delivery of complex written reports and presentations to senior management, Council and other relevant forums.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and investigative skills with the ability to initiate, formulate, implement, monitor and evaluate new strategies, policies, procedures, services, programs, and guidelines that will deliver value to Council and our community.
  • A demonstrated commitment to safety from both a leadership and personal perspective.
