Labourers/Plant operators and Truck Drivers

Up to six (6) temporary full time positions will be offered to the 31 July 2022 to work in with Councils extensive grants works program. An eligibility list will also be established from this recruitment program for any positions that may be able to be filled permanently or casually during this period.

Job Description

As a member of the Works and Technical Services Department, Works Section, the position of Labourer/plant operator will be responsible for day to day duties in the parks and gardens, roads and waste depot areas of Council as maybe allocated by the overseer. Higher grade duties for plant operations and Heavy Rigid (or Higher Truck Licence) will be paid when operating this equipment.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT is subject to the Local Government (State) Award 2020.
HOURS OF WORK:38 hours per week
Monday to Friday – 9 day fortnight – rostered day off every alternate Friday
Working Hours are 6:54am to 4:00pm with a 30 minute unpaid meal break
Reasonable overtime as maybe required of management.

Desired Skills and Experience

 

  • Operate vehicles and plant of all sizes including lawn mowers and whipper snippers.
  • Carry out labouring duties on road construction sites, water and waste water environment, parks and gardens and town maintenance.
  • Use and apply chemicals in accordance with SWP’s carry out Traffic Control duties.
  • Carry out basic concreting with footpaths, driveways and piped culvert drainage construction.
  • Take care of own and others’ safety and wellbeing by following safe work practices and alerting the appropriate personnel to any health and safety concerns.
  • Act in manner to use basic sense and a variety of problem solving methods to develop workable solutions for jobs.
  • All other duties as directed within the skills and knowledge of the Band Level of the Award.

Key Selection Criteria

Essential:

  1. Must hold a construction industry induction card issued by SafeWork NSW, – Work Safely in the construction industry.
  2. Relevant work experience in a labouring role either in Parks & Gardens, concreting, building, roads or signs maintenance.
  3. Demonstrate ability to work as a member of a team, follow instructions and complete assigned tasks.
  4. Demonstrate a willingness to attend training and learn new skills associated with a variety of activities.
  5. Demonstrated ability to operate electronic devices ie mobile phone and/or tablet or be prepared to be trained in their operation.
  6. Demonstrate ability to carry out manual, physically demanding, labour on a day to day basis.
  7. Minimum Class C drivers licence.
  8. Have or prepared to obtain certificates in Chemical usage, endorsement for various heavy equipment/Plant, HC licence etc.

Desirable:

  1. MR/HR/HC licence and experience operating a variety of plant and machinery.
  2. Previous experience working on road construction projects.
  3. Hold a current Implement Traffic Control Plans or Traffic Controller tickets

  1. Ability to perform laboring, plant and vehicles operation tasks as directed, safely and in a timely manner.
  2. Ability to follow directions, work as a member of a team, by helping colleagues and take on additional tasks when workloads are high.
  3. Evidence of appropriate communication by showing respect, courtesy and fairness when interacting with customers and member of the community
  4. Available and work overtime as maybe required by council.
  5. Ability to adhere to WHS requirements and follow WHS reporting requirements.
  6. Able to pass a pre-employment examination and ongoing drug and alcohol tests
